Monday 7 October 2013

An Army captain was killed when mechanical failure caused his military helicopter to crash, an inquest has heard.

Simon Hill, 28, was returning from training cadets when the Gazelle helicopter nosedived into a field in Batcombe, near Bruton in Somerset.

The jury at the inquest at Wells Town Hall, Somerset, heard a vital piece of equipment which held the rotor blade in place had corroded.

Salvage operation

Lieutenant Colonel William Henderson, accident investigator and flight safety officer, showed the jury a presentation of the investigation into the failed aircraft.

He said an examination of the wreckage, spread over a one kilometre area, showed failure and impact while the helicopter was in the air.

Two separate investigations had showed that a torsion bar, which was filled with stainless steel wires and holds the main rotor head, had corroded and failed after moisture entered through plastic casing. - Source – BBC News

Chinese Copy of Ascott Product

cid:image004.jpg@01CEC019.DE1979D0

The above copy of an Ascott chamber was photographed at the recent Automotive show September 2013, held in China.

The resemblance was clear, however, as with most copied products, they were unable to offer the quality of workmanship and we would imagine, with experience unable to perform most standards the original chamber this was based on.

Although we could take it as a compliment that our products have been copied, we do not accept that others can steal our intellectual property without penalty. So we have insisted that the exhibition organisers ban this company from their future exhibitions and we have commenced legal action against this company in China.

Electronic Catchpots ¢ç

Maximum repeatability and accuracy of salt fog fall-out measurement in corrosion test chambers is now enhanced with new Ascott Electronic Catchpots¢ç – providing automatic measurement without the need for operator intervention.

Conventionally, salt spray measurement is undertaken manually via collection vessels – located at key points in a chamber – which are removed and assessed at regular intervals. This is designed to maintain fall-out within specified limits – typically, 1-2ml per 80cm©÷ per hour.

"Particularly with long term testing, there are self-evident risks with this procedure," says Ascott Analytical¡¯s MD, Chris Gates, "while it can also interrupt the testing process and potentially unsettle the climate inside the chamber. Equally, manual measurement is necessarily retrospective."

By contrast, the new Ascott Electronic Catchpots¢ç – suitable for the company¡¯s ¡®iP¡¯ salt spray or CCT chambers – provide continuous measurement of the fall-out and activate automatic adjustment of the salt spray delivery process. This ensures that the operation remains within the specification.

"Frequency can be set by the user with results then displayed on the chamber¡¯s high resolution operating screen," continues Chris Gates. He points out that the equipment can then be linked directly to the salt spray delivery system for fully automatic control.

Adrian Wain has been the Operations Manager of Ascott Analytical Equipment since he joined us in 2008. Since that time, and despite the global economic recession, Ascott has doubled our sales turnover. This success is due to many people - including our hard working distributors and agents around the world, but Adrian is the person who deserves most of the credit for the significant transformation in our business operations, which has enabled us to meet this increasing demand.

I am therefore pleased to announce that Adrian has been appointed to the board of directors of Ascott, with immediate effect. In his new role of Operations Director, Adrian will continue to build on our past successes, and take overall responsibility for meeting our customers¡¯ expectations, in every respect.

I hope you will join me in congratulating Adrian on his appointment. His direct e-mail address should you wish to contact him (at any time) is: adrian.wain@ascott-analytical.com
